Ames is the closest metro to where I live, and I've done a bit of everything here — corporate holiday parties, conferences, high school assemblies, college shows, and after prom nights, including a few staged inside the mall, which is a genuinely strange and great room to work. Being this close means I'm not a travel line on your budget and I'm not a weather risk in April. Ames also empties out and refills with the academic calendar, so a summer event and a February event are two completely different attendance conversations.
